After having had a satisfying meal, many of us just want to go to bed the rest of the night and watch a movie or TV show. But little do we know, that this is really one of the worst things we can do after eating. Little bad habits like this can get in the way of reaching our healthiest potential. Read on for 5 things not recommended to do after eating if you want optimal well-being.
5 things you should never do after eating
1. Sleep
Going to sleep right after eating causes your stomach to have heartburn at night, which causes discomfort, bloating, and strange sleeping patterns. One study found that people who waited longer after eating to go to bed were less likely to have a stroke. With this in mind, the general rule of thumb is to eat at least 3 hours before bed.
2. Smoking
Unfortunately for some people, it is very difficult to quit smoking. While it's probably one of the most damaging things you can do to your lungs, at least wait a couple of hours after eating if you're going to do it. This is because the nicotine in cigarettes binds to excess oxygen that is necessary for digestion, allowing your body to absorb more carcinogens than normal.
According to studies, smoking right after a meal is the same as smoking ten cigarettes at a time. It also increases the risk of bowel and lung cancer.
3. Shower
When we shower, our body increases blood flow to the hands, legs, and body, which decreases the amount of blood flow to the stomach. Showering after eating weakens the digestive system, causing it to become inefficient, which can cause stomach aches.
4. Eat fruits
You probably thought you could eat fruit at any time, right? Well, it's actually better to eat fruit on an empty stomach. This is because fruits require different enzymes to digest, and the simple sugars in fruits take time to be fully absorbed by the body.
With nothing in your stomach but good fruit, you'll benefit from all the nutrients, fibers, and simple sugars. If you wait until near or after a meal, the fruit stays in the stomach for a long period and rots in the intestine. This can cause indigestion, heartburn, belching, and other discomfort.
5. Drink tea
Drinking tea right after a meal interferes with iron absorption. The tannic acid in tea binds with the protein and iron in our food, preventing our bodies from reaping the benefits of digesting them. This results in an 87% decrease in iron absorption!
Low iron can trigger anemia, a deficiency of red blood cells, leading to extreme fatigue, weakness, pale skin, chest pain, dizziness, cold hands and feet, brittle nails, and poor appetite.
The next time you eat, make a mental note of the weather and be sure to leave some space between taking a break, eating fruit, drinking tea, or showering. And also, quit smoking.
